The Life and Thought of W.H. Hudson

An Ecological Vision of Earth: The Life and Thought of W.H. Hudson by Brian Morris was published on 15 April 2026. ISBN: 978-1-9993172-8-7, 276pp., softback, £17.

Hudson (1841−1922) was born in Argentina and spent his boyhood and youth on the pampas of La Plata, largely engaged in natural history. He came to England aged thirty-two. Books such as Green Mansions and A Shepherd’s Life have become classics, whilst Hudson has been widely acknowledged as a pioneer ecologist, as well as a prose-poet of the English landscape and its wildlife. Both readable and scholarly, the book offers an introduction to this remarkable naturalist.

Bread and Honey was published on 17 August 2022

Henry Hapwood is in hiding, silence his only means of defence. He is at war with his false wife Stephanie and her awful son Oliver. Henry will not give in and Stephanie and Oliver will not give up. Bread and Honey is a novel about money and sex. It’s also about love and family, ambition and greed and the improbable joys of solitude and strong Cheddar. It takes place in three very different countries and at two very different times. If there’s a message in the telling of the tale the author has yet to figure out what it is.

The Quality of Knowing

The Quality of Knowing is Tom Saunders' latest novel published on 17 August 2021.

The heat was unimaginable, the green of the countryside burnt to a dusty brown. Met Office records had been equalled and exceeded. Gardeners everywhere mourned the wilting of their best blooms and grew nostalgic for rain and resentful of hosepipe bans. Deliveries of sun-block and sunglasses failed to keep pace with the soaring temperatures. The neglected Victorian seaside resorts were crowded again. Along the seafronts, fish and chips, hot-dogs and burgers were being watched over by perspiring vendors and served to holiday-makers madly braving the midday sun under skies of Continental blue. While out on the piers and down on the beaches, ice-cream cones melted in seconds in the heat, tiny children licking their fingers, their faces bearded with white.

The main character  is driving back home to the house he grew up in, and back with his mother and the ghost of his older sister.
